There is always a question about sitting and health. Now, recent events have found more people sitting for work or leisure but the question still remains, is sitting dangerous to our health? Before we jump into answering this question, letās take a look at our bodies. The human body was designed to move. In the beginning, this was survival to keep away from predators and to aid us in the search for food. In many ways, our jobs required us to move for survival. Today though, we, as a species do not have to worry about trying to outrun a predator or gather food. We simply go to the store and with curbside pickup and online ordering, we now do not even have to walk around and “gather” our food. Instead, we can pay someone else to do that chore for us. Now since our bodies were meant to move, there are some safeguards put into place. This includes storing fat for energy for a quick getaway and a muscle called a heart. This muscle allows us to keep pumping blood through our bodies while we make the escape. While all these safeguards were created to protect us, they have not adapted to the change in times where we really do not have to move much to survive. This not only includes the basics of life but also our jobs, and leisure time. There are many more examples of how our active life has changed to one strapped to a chair, so letās learn how this sedimentary lifestyle affects our bodies. How Sedimentary Lifestyle Affects Your BodyOn a normal day, one gets up from approximately eight hours of sleep and goes to the kitchen where one sits down. You drive to work or ride the bus and arrive at your job, where you probably sit for eight hours. You go home, cook dinner, sit on the couch to watch some entertainment or play video games and go to bed to repeat this process the next day. Now since you are not running around protecting yourself or gathering food, you are burning less of your fat reserves. This, in turn,Ā means weight gain and obesity, which also leads to a cluster of issues such as increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the middle, andĀ abnormal cholesterol levels. This cluster is also referred to as a metabolic syndrome. It is true that this is not the lifestyle of many but in several situations, the picture painted is very true for young and old. While some can envision a person over 18 having this lifestyle, more and more young people are going to school, coming home, and sitting in front of a computer screen or game system, which means they are in the same health boat that individuals are who work at desk jobs.Other Reasons Why Prolonged Sitting Is Bad For Your Health ā¢Ā It can weaken your legs and glutes ā¢Ā Your anxiety and depression might spike ā¢Ā Can lead to deep vein thrombosis ā¢Ā Significant stress on spinal structures as well as other joints, such as the shoulders and hips ![]() Related:Ā The Best Natural Painkiller That Grows in Your Own Backyard How Can You Save Your Health From The Dangers Of Sitting? But what is one to do when so many jobs require one to sit? First, it has been discovered that 75 minutes of moderate exercise can counter many of the negative effects of sitting. Another approach to use is to lose weight. ![]() One herb that is easy to make into tea is ginger. Drinking ginger tea throughout the day will reduce your appetite, increase metabolism, and burn fat. Another herb that will aid you in losing weight is cayenne pepper. While you may not want to make a tea with this herb, how about adding it to the food you eat throughout the day. As an example, add a splash to your eggs for breakfast. When eating lunch, cayenne pepper is tasty when mixed with a bit of low-fat mayo for a sandwich topping. You may think dinner can only mean some Mexican food and this is not the case. Consider adding some cayenne pepper to tomato juice for a pre-dinner drink. Beyond herbs, exercise is very important as noted previously but you do not have to set aside a full 75 minutes out of your schedule to meet this goal. It has been discovered that even bite-size or snack-size amounts of exercise can add up to 75 minutes, which really means there is no excuse. ![]() Before we move to some easy ways of reaching that 75-minute mark, keep in mind that these tips also apply to sitting on the couch or in front of the TV. Get moving after sitting for 30 minutes. In the business world, this can mean walking over to the water cooler or walking to the bathroom. While you are on the phone, consider taking the call standing up. Another idea that will keep you up on your feet is a standing desk. Due to more people working from home, these “standing desk” products are more available. If this is not a possibility, consider placing your computer on a high table or counter. ![]() Or start a company walking program that occurs during lunch or after work. You can use the same idea when you get home. Get the kids away from the screens and have a family walk around the neighborhood. In a nutshell, if you just picked a few of these snack-size suggestions you would rack up 75 minutes a day in no time. There is also a downside to all this exercise and that is sore muscles. But as they say, no pain no gain, right. Well, that is true but you can easily make an herbal salve that you can rub on those sore spots. Why You Should Put Garlic in Your Ear Before Going to Sleep
The Home Doctor – Practical Medicine for Every Household– is a 304 page doctor written and approved guide on how to manage most health situations when help is not on the way.
If you want to see what happens when things go south, all you have to do is look at Venezuela: no electricity, no running water, no law, no antibiotics, no painkillers, no anesthetics, no insulin or other important things.
But if you want to find out how you can still manage in a situation like this, you must also look to Venezuela and learn the ingenious ways they developed to cope.
About Dr. Maybell Nieves:
Dr. Maybell Nieves – head surgeon of the Unit of Breast Pathology and general surgeon at Caracas University Hospital in Venezuela, with over 10 years of experience in the operating room. She studied at the prestigious European Institute of Oncology in Milan, Italy.
Dr. Maybell is known for developing new, ingenious methods of treating patients after Venezuela’s economy collapsed and hospitals and pharmacies ran out of medicines, supplies, electricity and running water.
The methods she developed and pioneered are now studied and applied in conflict zones all over the world.
Many of these protocols and procedures do not require medical assistance as they are specifically designed to be self-applied. That makes them extremely valuable if the medical system cannot be depended on, like during long term blackouts.
You can find some of these methods below! As you read them, you can easily understand why they are so useful and why every household and family should have them close by. She co-authored the book with Dr Rodrigo Alterio and Claude Davis.
Hereāsjust a small glimpse of what youāll find in
The Home Doctor: Practical Medicine for Every Household:
This book is a unique guide for the layman that you can use when help is not on the way or to manage common ailments that don’t require seeing a doctor.
Let me show you just some of the things youāll find inside the Home Doctor:
10 Medical Supplies You Need to Have in Your House
These supplies are not expensive and should still be available, but they tend to run out fast.
In case you havenāt realized it yet, most of the medical supplies and pills we take for granted come from China and India. This supply chain is vulnerable and can be interrupted by something like an EMP.
One of the 10 supplies you should have in advance is a painkiller called Naproxen, which is over the counter and more powerful than others like ibuprofen for example.
The Biggest Mistakes You Can Make
in a Blackout
In Venezuela, electricity has turned into a rare and unpredictable commodity. They donāt have it all the time, and blackouts have become a normal part of daily life.
Inside the Home Doctor, youāll also learn about the biggest medical mistakes you can make in a blackout and what to do with important medications that require refrigeration, like insulin or Humira.
How to Recognize a Heart Attack
and What to Do Next
Look at its four distinctive symptoms: first, chest discomfort that feels like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, and pain in the middle of your chest that lasts for more than a few minutes.
The second symptom is discomfort or pain in one or both arms and your back, neck, jaw, or stomach.
The third symptom is shortness of breath.
The last thing you need to watch out for is breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea, and lightheadedness.
These donāt all come at once, but if you see even one or two, itās time to call 911.
Another step you can take to improve your chances before the ambulance arrives is to chew on an aspirin and pour a vial of nitroglycerin under your tongue. But you need to have these two items at home beforehand.
What Happens When You Take Expired Medications
No country in the world has had to use more expired medication than Venezuela.
Dr. Maybell and other doctors were able to see what happens firsthand, and itās almost guaranteed to surprise you: most medications you have in your medicine cabinet are good for years after their expiration dates; which medication is safe to take after its expiration date and which ones are not.
So, pay close attention to this chapter before you throw away your so called āexpiredā medication.
The Only 4 Antibiotics People Should Stockpile
Modern antibiotics are lifesavers. Without them, a simple cold can quickly turn into a deadly pneumonia, an infection in a small cut can become life threatening.
Iāve selected to stockpile a 4 different antibiotics for just this reason and I want to show you how you can do the same… legally, without a prescription.
They contain distinctive substances that act very differently, so while it could happen that you stumble upon a bacteria that is resistant to one of them, the chance it can withstand all four is very slim.
Antibiotics will become priceless in times of need once they become scarce. Having these 4 at home for you and your family is at least as important as having food stockpiles. But under no circumstance should you take them without consulting a doctor first.
The Best Natural Painkiller That Grows in Your Own Backyard
Another thing youāll discover is the best natural painkiller that probably grows in your own backyard.
This is the painkilling plant that many in Venezuela turned to after they couldnāt find relief at the pharmacy anymoreā¦and it grows all over North America as well.
An Ingenious Way to Stockpile Prescription Medicines, Including Insulin
Iāll also show you how to deal with shortages of medicines such as insulin, which some people need to take every day.
A friend of mine from Texas found a workaround and is able to get all the insulin he needs daily and even extra to stockpile.
His ingenious method is completely legal and safe. You could start using it immediately not only for insulin but also for some other medicines that are notoriously hard to stockpile.
How to Quickly Recognize a Stroke and
The First ThingYOU MUST DO IMMEDIATELY Afterward
When dealing with a stroke, time is of the essence, and every second counts. If you act quickly, most of the time your body can recover completely.
Alternatively, many people end up partially paralyzed or worse. Inside the Home Doctor, Iāll show you the fastest way you can recognize it and the one thing you must do immediately to improve your chances.
What Happens if You Take the Wrong Probiotics
Iāll also show you the only probiotics you really need to keep in your medicine cabinet.
Probiotics are microorganisms that live inside your gut and influence your metabolism and overall health.
They can even trigger allergies. Their effects are so widespread that you donāt want to have the wrong probiotics and risk messing up your gut flora. I personally know people who gained a lot of weight taking bad probiotics.
A good probiotic, on the other hand, can make all the difference: It can improve your digestion, help you get rid of gas, absorb the maximum amount of good nutrients from the food you eat, and take care of both diarrhea and constipation.
A Simple āAt-Homeā Method for the Flu and Other Respiratory Issues
During the flu season, a lot of people end up in the hospital with a high fever, coughing their lungs out.
So one of the things I want to give you is a simple protocol to deal with it at home if going to a hospital is off the table.
A Step-by-Step Approach to Deal With
Almost Every Skin Injury and Condition
In Chapter 3, Skin and Skin Appendages, youāll find out all you need to know to manage conditions of the skin, such as corns, warts, athleteās food, burns and scalds, dermatitis, fungal infections of the nails, insect bites and stings, abscesses, ulcers or open woundsā¦
Youāll also discover why you should put egg whites on second-degree burns, what over-the-counter medicines and creams to stockpile, and the exact process of cleaning, stitching, and treating an open wound at home.
The Unnoticed Symptom
That May Point to an Internal Inflammation
Youāll also learn about the little-known body signs that tells you if you have hidden inflammation inside your body at this very moment.
The 1-Minute Stretch
That Relieves Most Back and Neck Pains
Youāll find out how I deal with my back problems. Until I found this one-minute stretch routine, I often woke up like a hunchback and could barely walk to the bathroom. And it usually took me several hours to become functional again.
If this sounds at all familiar to you, you should learn this simple move.
A Natural DIY Antibiotic Salve Recipe to Keep Around
An antibiotic ointment is nice to have around when you need it.
The recipe found inside the Home Doctor aids in keeping a wound from becoming infected and help reduce scarring.
How to Perform a Complete Breast Exam at Home
A woman should know how to determine if there is anything wrong with your breasts. The earlier you catch wind of something, the better your recovery becomes.
Thatās why Iāll show you a simple set of diagrams and instructions that you can follow to put your mind at ease. Dr. Maybell perfected this method while working for two years at the prestigious European Institute of Oncology in Milan, Italy.
How to Use Leeches Medicinally
Just Like Folks 100 Years Ago
Have you ever heard of leeches used as medicine? They are an extremely effective and easy-to-use remedy for preventing a wound from festering and speeding up healing, as long as youāre not squeamish that is. Another thing theyāre good for is high blood pressure. Because they decrease the amount of blood flowing, they also lower the stress on your arteries.
An Ingenious Eggshell Remedy and 25 Others Made from Things People Usually Throw Away
Iām also going to show you 25 remedies made from things you usually throw away. One manās trash is another manās treasure as they say. For example, you can turn the eggshells you throw away into calcium pills that will be greatly appreciated in times of need or when food becomes scarce.
How to Take Care of Toothaches and Mouth Infections When You Canāt Visit a Dentist
Ever had a really bad toothache that just wouldnāt go away?
A dental infection can quickly become a nuisance, so you want to know how to take care of it the right way.
The Best Way to Tell if
an Arrhythmia Is Benign or Dangerous
Some changes in heart rate and rhythm are normal during sleep, physical activity, and moments of stress.
But other times, an irregular heart rhythm, or arrhythmia, may be a serious problem, which, left untreated, can lead to cardiac arrest and stroke.
The way you decide if itās time to call 911 is by looking at the symptoms of dangerous arrhythmia, which never appear for milder versions. These are shortness of breath, dizziness, lightheartedness, near fainting or fainting, and mild chest pain. If you feel your heart beating too fast or too slow and also experience at least a one of these symptoms, call an ambulance immediately.
How to Remove an Ingrown Nail
Youāll also discover how to remove an ingrown nail. In a situation where medical help is hard to come by, an ingrown nail can cause a serious infection if you donāt remove it.
Why You Should Always Keep a Stick of Gum Close by if Your Ears Start to Hurt
Itās simple really: when you chew the right kind of gum, you not only decrease pressure inside the ear by continuous jaw movements but also ward off ear infections. Thatās because of a sweetener called Xylitol.
How to Know Whatās Wrong if Youāve Got Abdominal Pain
Iāll also show you what to do if youāre experiencing pain in your abdomen. Itās called an abdominal evaluation, and youāve probably undergone it before when going to a doctor for a check-up.
Inside the Home Doctor, youāll have a complete diagram with nine sections of the abdomen that, upon palpation, should reveal where the problem is.
Are Your Migraines Hiding Something More Serious?
You’ll discover which two types of migraines are most common and the simple but essential things you need to do to identify which one you have and how to get rid of it.
Especially if itās a recurrent one, like once a month, you need to read this chapter. This could also be a sign of something you shouldn’t ignore.
How to Deal with Injuries Caused During Social Unrest
You’ll also learn how to deal with typical wounds caused by violent protesters and rioters.
As a surgeon in Venezuela, Maybell dealt with probably more wounds like these than many doctors in other parts of the world during their whole career. We are no strangers to such events, either, so I say it’s best to be prepared.
What Doctors Do to Keep Their Immunity High
Youāll also discover how to keep your immune system healthy.
You’ll learn the things that doctors do to keep their immunity high after they come in close contact with sick people, things that you can also do at home to protect your family.
How to Use Salt and Oil for Tooth and Gum Decay
You’ll also discover the old mustard oil and salt remedy that people use to restore gums and remove plaque.
Salt acts as a mild abrasive that helps remove stains and brighten teeth. It also contains a natural source of fluoride, which is a bonus for your teeth.
On the other hand, mustard oil helps strengthen your gums and makes it easier to remove the plaque naturally.
The 10 Most Sought-After Bartering Items in Venezuela
Iāll also show you ten non-medical items you must stockpile now. A few months after Venezuelaās economy collapsed, these ten items became VERY precious and they could be traded for almost anything you neededāincluding medicine.
A Before-Bed Recipe to Sleep Like a Baby Again
Youāll also find out about some of the ingredients that you probably have in your kitchen right now, which, when mixed the right way, can help you fall asleep.
If you are taking sleeping pills from time to time, even melatonin, you should try to replace them with this recipe instead as itās natural and completely safe.
40 Interesting Home Reliefs from Our Grandparents That Could Help You
Youāll also rediscover 40 home remedies our grandparents taught us that doctors still use or prescribe. These have once again become very important for people who like try a more natural approach. For example, you can tackle some headaches using a potato, deal with bug bites using toothpaste, lower fever with vinegar, detox over night sleeping with half an onion in socks, make cough syrup from black radish, and many others.
The Antibiotic Plant That Saved Venezuela
Did you know there is a sort of natural “doxycycline” to be found as close as your own backyard?
The plant is called Usnea, and itās popularly known as Old Manās Beard. This wild plant grows all over North-America and once you gather some, Iāll show you how to turn it into an antibiotic tincture to greatly increase its potency and shelf-life.
Cabbage Wraps for Inflammation
Cabbage leaves are a great anti-inflammatory and contain compounds that can also draw out poison or pus from a wound and speed up the healing. This isnāt even a folk remedy. Dr. Maybell was taught this in medical school and confirmed it in her practice later on in life.
Why You Should Always Keep Some Listerine
in Your Medicine Cabinet
Iāll also show you why keeping a small stockpile of Listerine in your medicine cabinet can be a very good idea.
Listerine was invented in 1879 and was originally formulated as a surgical antiseptic. It was named after the brilliant British surgeon, Joseph Lister, who is still widely considered to be the father of antisepsis, the science of preventing infections.
In the hospitals of Venezuela, they used a lot of Listerine for different types of bacterial and fungal infections, wounds, gangrene, and diabetic foot.
And even all of that is just the tip of the iceberg of what youāll find inside the Home Doctor. This book is absolutely massive with over 300 pages filled with practical tips, precise diagrams, and step-by-step instructions that may allow you to stay healthy and help others in need.
With the Home Doctor, you can become a āhome docā yourself. Home docs are self-reliant people who take care of themselves and their families when the situation demands it. Thatās what I wanted to achieve with this bookāto empower normal people, to take care of themselves, their loved ones, and even their communities when doctors and hospitals are not available anymore.

The Narcissist as Human Parasite: Are You a Host?
By Julie L Hall on Share1924ShareShareShare
Although narcissists would never admit it, they are by nature dependent on other people for their emotional survival. If they were loners, many lives would be spared immeasurable misery. But the narcissist actively, persistently pursues others to obtain ānarcissistic supply,ā or the attention, status, and reassurance s/he needs for emotional survival. The narcissist as human parasite takes a heavy emotional and physiological toll on her/his supplier āhosts.ā
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines a parasite as follows:
āA parasite is an organism that lives on or in a host and gets its food from or at the expense of its host. Parasites can cause disease in humans.ā

Parasitism isnāt just about āfeeding,ā however. Scientists have uncovered many parasite-host relationships in which the parasite actually alters the brain and behavior of its host to make it assist in fulfilling vital parts of the parasiteās life cycle. A certain type of tiny wasp, for example, injects its egg along with chemicals into a ladybug. The egg hatches and consumes the nutrients that the ladybug ingests when it eats, essentially devouring the ladybug from the inside out. When the wasp larva is big enough, it squirms out of the ladybug and wraps itself in a cocoon beneath it. Immobilized and half dead, the ladybug is still programmed in essence to protect the larva by thrashing its body around if threatening insects approach. Once the larva-turned-wasp hatches from its cocoon and flies away, the ladybug typically dies.
The Narcissist as Human Parasite
Understanding narcissism through the lens of parasitism explains the narcissistās reliance on others as a means of supply. Individuals with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) suffer from a destabilized identity and sense of inferiority rooted in childhood attachment disruptions. Narcissists attempt to adapt by projecting a superior persona. But they are always seeking the validation they did not receive at crucial developmental stages. Their incomplete sense of being compels them to seek identity and self-worth externally, either by aligning with high-status people/things or by devaluing and dissociating from those who either threaten their false persona or who somehow in their eyes lower their status.
Like most parasites, narcissists rarely kill their hosts (although malignant ones may subject them to extreme violence). But like the mind-altering variety of parasite, the narcissist works to control the ābrainsā of her/his suppliers through a wide range of manipulations, from bullying to projecting, denying to gaslighting, guilt-tripping to silent-treatment. The narcissist continuously orchestrates the ārealityā around her/him by enlisting others in supporting her/his delusions of grandeur and punishing and/or rejecting them if they do not comply. To the narcissist, her/his spouse questioning an opinion s/he has declared as patented truth or her/his child not making the soccer team are potential humiliations, to which s/he may react with scorn or rage. In the parasitic narcissistās eyes, both situations weaken the desirability of sources of supply, and thereby threaten her/his sense of well-being.
Are You a Narcissistās Host?
Narcissists have an instinct for finding and attaching themselves to potential hosts. Such people in some way offer narcissists status while also enabling their harshly self-serving world-view and behavior.
A host may confer status to the narcissist in many ways, including by being well-liked, good looking, wealthy, famous, or professionally accomplished. The host also enables the narcissist by directly or indirectly being complicit in the narcissistās distorted reality and abusive behavior to protect her/his false face. In this sense, the enabling host is like the mind-altered ladybug, serving the needs of the narcissist, often at its own expense.
Are you functioning as a kind of host for a narcissist? Here are some ways to tell if youāre in a relationship with one:
- They demand inordinate attention and admiration.
- They react with retaliatory rage or sulking punishment if you disagree or argue with them.
- They donāt apologize or take responsibility for their behavior, no matter how inappropriate or hurtful.
- They lack interest in or compassion for your feelings and needs and project their bad behavior onto you.
- They display an inflated sense of entitlement and cause a scene or react bitterly if they feel snubbed or victimized.
- You feel like youāre constantly vulnerable to attack and/or criticism.
- You find yourself regularly placating and avoiding confrontation.
- You feel it is unsafe to freely express your feelings or opinions around them.
- You are emotionally and physically hypervigilant to potential conflict.
- You feel isolated by the relationship.

SteveJune 14, 2019 at 5:27 pmYou are right that innumerable people would be spared, as well as the knock-on effects for society, if these parasites were never born. They tend to lack the happiness and creativity of people with warmth and energy, so survive by leeching off them. I once met a narcissist / psychopath called Sayalay Anuttara who exhibited all these traits. Manipulative and spiritually dead, but trying to use religion as a way to control others, and further her own name. These people are sickening.Reply

Slippery Elm (Ulmus rubra) is a deciduous tree that grows in a cold climate. It is also known as the red elm because of its reddish-brown inner heartwood. But what earns its popular name is the slippery and gooey mucilage found in its inner bark. This substance is used as an ingredient in most lozenges and suppositories. Slippery elm mucilage is also an excellent binder that can hold unleavened bread together. More than its medicinal value, the wood of the slippery elm also makes durable timber. It is used in boats and canoes because it remains strong even after a long time underwater.
The slippery elm tree also provides attractive foliage making them likable trees in parks and gardens. They are an excellent addition to winter and shade gardens, and they can attract butterflies and songbirds. On a separate note, collecting slippery elm barks can eventually kill it. This hounding overharvesting issue enlists it as an endangered tree. Thus, foraging for its bark is regulated and considered illegal in national and protected forests.
The slippery elm graces the forests of North America for many centuries and is a family to American elm. It is used as an herbal remedy for throat and stomach problems. Physicians during the American Revolution have used it as a poultice for gunshot wounds. Early American settlers also chew the slippery inner bark substance for quenching their thirst. The mucilage later gives it its name as a distinction from the American elm.
Where Is Slippery Elm Found?
Slippery elm is abundant in central and southern North America. It spreads over Maine and Florida and is also found in Texas and North Dakota. Some states in the United States and Canada may also grow a lower number of this hardwood. They particularly thrive in temperate forests and cove forests in low mountain regions.

How To Identify Slippery Elm
A medium-sized tree with a long trunk and spreading branches describes the slippery elm. It has a reddish-brown trunk with rough outer bark. But what sets it apart from other elm trees is its slimy inner bark.
- Leaves. This deciduous tree bears green leaves that will turn yellow and gold in the fall. It is oblong-shaped with serrations and is a little uneven at the base. The leaves have a rough texture, owing to the tiny hairs growing on their surface that are stiff at the upper part and pale at the base.
- Flower. Slippery elm flowers bloom from February to around April. The flowers are not showy, appearing in a dense cluster and short stalk. They are greenish-red or rusty-colored, with fuzzy hair but without petals. These flowers bloom before the leaves appear in the tree in early spring.
- Roots. The root system of the slippery elm is shallow and spreading. In dry soils, however, it may grow itself a taproot. It may spread in an area ranging from 24 to 60 ft.
- Seeds. The fertile flowers of the slippery elm will give rise to round samaras. A samara is a dry fruit without flesh but with papery wings. Slippery elm samara is single-seeded. The seed is about 12 to 18 mm long, often yellow or cream-colored.
- Stems/Trunks. Slippery elm trunks are rough, with their bark lined with deep furrows. The outer bark can be gray, dark brown, or reddish-brown, while the inner bark is rust-red colored. It oozes a clear, viscous, and gelatinous mucilage with a pleasant and fragrant smell.
Slippery elm has no known cultivars, but it was hybridized. In the early 20th century, the slippery elm (Ulmus rubra) was hybridized with the Siberian elm (Ulmus pumila) in the wild. As a hybrid parent, slippery elm produces limited cultivars. The most successful hybrid cultivars were Lincoln, Coolshade, Fremont Rosehill, and Improved Coolshade.

How To Grow Slippery Elm
Slippery elm is an endangered tree, and though it is a beautiful ornamental, it is hard to find commercially. Some shade and natural gardens may still grow these trees, but they thrive mostly in the wilds.
Propagating a slippery elm is possible through seeds. A cut-down tree stump will also grow new sprouts and eventually a new tree when left alone. They are easy to grow, hardy and tolerant, and may live for up to 300 years. They often fare up well in USDA hardiness zones 3 to 9. If you want to grow it in your yard, you will need ample space to accommodate its spreading roots in at least 24 ft.
Growing Slippery Elm From Seeds
Ripe slippery elm samaras that have fallen off are ideal for planting. Do not bother with removing the wings to avoid damaging the seeds. Airdry the seeds and stratify them at 41°F (5°C) for about 60 to 90 days before planting.
You may sow the seeds in a large container or directly into your garden. Once the plant has established itself and under favorable conditions, it should grow at about 3 ft per year.

Slippery Elm Plant Care
The slippery elm seedlings are hardy and tolerant to weather conditions. But they will grow best in the following cultural conditions:
- Clay-loam soil
- Soil pH level 6 to 8
- Well-draining, moist, or occasionally dry soil
- Full sun and partial shade
The problem with growing a slippery elm tree is that it is prone to Dutch elm disease. It is a kind of fungal disease in the bark spread by the bark beetles.
They are not as susceptible to the disease as the American elm, but infestation may still lead to plant death.
Prevention of the Dutch elm disease in elm trees includes proper pruning and watering. Accordingly, watering the plants from April to around mid-August will help. By mid-August, you should stop watering and allow only a couple more soaking before winter. It will allow the tree to harden up and prevent bugs from hosting in its trunk.
How To Harvest Slippery Elm
The inner bark is the most essential part of the slippery elm tree. Harvesting it means scraping off a sliver of its bark. Eventually, though, this process will also mean the imminent demise of the tree. The best way of harvesting tree bark is from its lower pruned branch and not from its trunk. It does not only apply to the slippery elm, but all trees foraged for their barks.
According to The Herbal Academy, the ideal way of foraging for bark is from naturally fallen trees within a few weeks after it fell. It can be tricky and a little less hopeful, but it is an ethical and sustainable way of bark harvesting.
The next best way is finding a small and low branch for a sliver of its bark. Slice a knife deep down into its wood, and the bark will come off easily. Once stripped off, separate the inner bark from the outer one. You can harvest the sap or dry the inner bark for later use or if you plan to grind it into powder.
Harvest of slippery elm bark is best done in spring and early summer. It is the season when the sap production is at its peak that it flows out of the bark easily.
What Slippery Elm Is Good For And Natural Remedies Made From It
Ulmus rubra is an excellent herb for treating colds and other respiratory symptoms. It has an effective action against asthma and is used for the fast healing of wounds and ulcers. Slippery elm is often used in lozenges that help in alleviating sore throat.
Traditionally, the slippery elm was used as a thirst quencher for the early American settlers. Its powdered bark is sometimes made into a nourishing gruel or porridge for sick and weakened patients. According to medicinal folklore, a gruel of slippery elm can heal broken bones faster. It is also an excellent antacid that can relieve GERD and heartburn and treat many digestive issues.
Slippery elm helps stimulate the nerve endings to increase their mucus production. Its slippery gel and the increased mucus coat the mouth, throat, and stomach alleviating any inflammation. This action also protects the gastrointestinal tract from ulcers and hyperacidity.
Slippery elm is also known for improving bowel movement. Thus, it is suggested as a cure for IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and ulcerative colitis. It is also an ingredient used in the making of suppositories.

There is little research evidence to back some of its medicinal properties. But the slippery elm is considered an effective herbal remedy for conditions like:
- Abscesses, boils, wounds, ulcers
- Asthma, laryngitis, sore throat, cough
- GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease)
- Constipation, irritable bowel syndrome
- Digestive problems
- Other respiratory problems
- Smoking addiction
What Parts Of The Slippery Elm Is Used For Remedies?
The mucilaginous inner bark is the most valuable part of the slippery elm used for remedies. Its leaves, flowers, and roots also make an important part in making infusions and decoctions. The inner bark that is harvested is sold either in its dried or powdered form.
Finely grounded slippery elm bark is good for tea and extracts preparations. Meanwhile, the coarsely powdered bark is ideal for use as a poultice. Today, slippery elm is marketed as a tablet, capsule, lozenge, or extract. Some manufacturers may add the slippery elm as an ingredient of nutrition drinks and some baby foods.

Warnings And Cautions
Slippery elm may not be safe in pregnant and breastfeeding women and should be avoided for safety. Traditionally, it is an abortifacient, which can cause miscarriage and preterm birth. However, it is unclear whether the cause is in administering slippery elm vaginally, or orally.
The slippery elm is safe for children, but a health practitionerās advice is needed for the dosage and administration of slippery elm supplements. Adults, especially those taking maintenance medicines for various conditions should also contact their health service provider. This herb may interfere with the absorption of some drugs and herbs.
When taking any supplements, even natural herbs, it is best to talk to your doctor. They can tell the possible interaction with your current medication or their potential side effects. Slippery elm does not have adverse side effects but it can cause allergies to people with product sensitivities.

What Bad Breath Tells You About Your Health

What Bad Breath Tells You About Your Health
POSTED JANUARY 17, 2022 BY ROSE KEEFE IN ALL ARTICLES, BACKYARD PLANTS, HOUSEHOLD REMEDIES9
When you experience bad breath, your first impulse may be to blame it on bad oral hygiene. Your teeth consist of layers that are sometimes penetrated by bacteria, especially if youāve recently chipped a tooth or had a filling. If this happens, an infection can set in, resulting in pain and odor.
While gum disease and tooth decay are indeed common causes of bad breath, if the problem persists even after youāve seen a dentist and started brushing and flossing regularly, there may be something else going on. In this article, weāll review some common diseases that can result in bad breath and what symptoms can alert you to each one.
Lactose Intolerance

If your breath smells like sour milk, it may be a sign of lactose intolerance. A milky odor can indicate that when you consume dairy products, you arenāt breaking down their proteins properly. If you also experience gas, stomach cramps, and diarrhea after consuming milk products, you might want to schedule an allergy test with your healthcare provider.

Kidney Problems

Healthy kidneys are vital to your well-being. They remove toxins and chemicals from your body, flushing them out as urine. When they donāt function like theyāre supposed to, it impacts the rest of your body, including the respiratory system. The following symptoms are all indicators that something may be going on with your kidneys:
- Fatigue and overall lack of energy
- Dry and itchy skin
- Need to frequently urinate
- Bloody and/or foamy urine
A fishy odor on your breath can also indicate a kidney disorder. Kidney failure, also known as end-stage renal disease, occurs when the kidneys are damaged to the point where they can no longer filter waste products from the blood. As a result, dangerous toxins and wastes donāt leave the body and accumulate, causing widespread complications. When kidney failure affects the respiratory system, it can cause fishy-breath odor.

Sleep Apnea

If you regularly notice bad breath when you wake up, you may be experiencing more than your typical morning breath. Dry mouth during the night can lead to the build-up of stinky bacteria just like not drinking enough water.
Snorers are more likely to experience this issue than those who breathe normally during sleep. Snoring can sometimes be caused by sleep apnea, which causes you to stop breathing during the night and can be dangerous if left untreated.
Snoring complications may be treated by your dentist or orthodontist, especially if jaw alignment is a problem. In cases of mild sleep apnea, your doctor might recommend simple lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking or losing weight.
With moderate to severe sleep apnea, you might benefit from a machine that delivers air pressure through a mask while you sleep. The air pressure in a CPAP machine is greater than that of the surrounding air, which prevents sleep apnea and snoring by keeping your airways open.

Diabetes
When diabetes is poorly managed, one is more likely to develop gum disease and dry mouth. Having high blood sugar levels weakens the bodyās ability to fight bacteria that can cause gum infections. These infections also cause bad breath.
However, a fruity breath odor or an odor similar to acetone (used in nail polish remover) can also indicate ketoacidosis, a serious problem in diabetics. When the body lacks insulin, it uses fatty acids for energy, resulting in the production of acidic ketones. These acids, which include acetone, hydroxybutyrate, and acetoacetate, can build up in the blood and result in a diabetic coma or death.

If youāre experiencing the following symptoms in addition to unusual breath odor, see your doctor for an evaluation:
- Frequent urination
- Constant hunger and/or thirst
- Weight loss
- Blurry vision
- Dry skin
- Fatigue
Acid Reflux And GERD
Digestive conditions such as acid reflux and gastroesophageal reflux disease, also known as GERD, delay or prevent food from being processed normally in your stomach. When food is digested more slowly, it can decay and even be regurgitated, causing bad breath. You may even experience acid erosion in your teeth and a sore, inflamed throat.

Other symptoms may include:
- Heartburn after eating, which may be worse at night
- Pain in your chest
- Trouble swallowing
- Sensation of a lump in your throat
GERD isnāt the only digestive health issue that can cause bad breath. According to a study published in the Journal of Medical Microbiology, the H. pylori bacteria that causes stomach ulcers may also cause bad breath.
Related: Home Remedies For Acid Reflux
Sinusitis And Allergies
Several respiratory tract infections can cause bad breath, including the flu, bronchitis, and sinusitis. Inflammation of tissues in the respiratory tract can trigger the production of bacteria-feeding cells and mucus. In addition, allergies and nasal congestion can cause bad breath because they force you to breathe through your mouth, leading to dryness and bacterial growth.
Related: Allergies And Asthma No More!
Stomach Cancer

The recent development of nanoarray analysis, which is a breath-test technology, has made it possible to identify levels of compounds with a known link to stomach cancer.
This test uses nanotechnology to analyze atoms called nanoarrays. In this instance, the array contains atoms from breath samples, and the computer examines them for the presence of specific compounds associated with stomach cancer.
In 2013, researchers in Haifa, Israel, tested breath samples from 484 people who had fasted for 12 hours and refrained from smoking for three hours before the test. Ninety-nine participants had been diagnosed with stomach cancer, although their treatment had not yet begun. Nanoarray analysis successfully detected the different early stages of stomach cancer, which may enable physicians to identify patients at greater risk of developing the disease.
Bad breath can be more than a social embarrassment. It could also be a sign that you need to brush and floss more frequently or it could mean that youāre in the early stages of stomach cancer. If brushing doesnāt resolve it, your next step should be a visit to your healthcare provider. Breath abnormalities can be one of the earliest symptoms of different illnesses, and taking action now can increase your chances of a successful outcome.

RADAR POSTED FEBRUARY 3, 2022 5:02 PMJust today I read an article about Ketogenic diets (a diet with very little starches, mostly meat and vegetables, and maybe some organic dairy). The article said that some people get ābad breathā because their body produces acetone and ketones and it can be smelled on skin and breath. The diet is considered extremely healthy, warding off all the diseases found in USA (cancer, diabetes, weight). Basically ketogenic means that the bodyās fuel is fat based (meat, veggies, etc.) and not starch based (all processed foods and sugar). Here is the article I read: https://articles.mercola.com/ketogenic-diet.aspx? The reference to bad breath is at the very end of the article (that explains many types of ketogenic diets) and the first mention in a chart (probably last chart in article). Hope that helps.Reply

A keto diet essentially consists of mostly meat and veggies and very little starches (almost no USA based processed foods). He says the body fuels itself with keto diets with acetone that causes the odor. He suggests as a solution frequent mouth rinsing, brushing (tongue included) and coconut oil (I am presuming it to be a liquid, and not the solid, but you could melt the solid). Then swishing in a closed mouth the coconut oil in and out around your teeth. The mention in the article is at the very end of article, in first box, probably in last chart. His article also mentions about 10 different keto diets. Check it out. Best wishes.ReplyJUDY POSTED FEBRUARY 15, 2022 11:11 AMYou could do some oil pulling. Any amount of alcohol can cause harm to the body but the curcumin in turmeric helps protect the liver, brain, and other organs from possible damage. Now, this does not mean that you should eat large amounts of turmeric or consume curcumin in pill form before drinking. What it does mean is that this spice does provide some protection for the organs that could be damaged due to alcohol consumption.
4. Reduce Damage Caused By Smoking
If you are a smoker, you may consider eating more dishes that contain turmeric. The curcumin in turmeric seems to reduce the damage caused by nicotine. But one should not take this advice and start smoking. The best way to reduce nicotine damage is not to smoke.
5. A Treatment For The Flu
If you are not in a high-risk group, giving turmeric or golden milk a try is worth the effort before going to the doctor.
Drinking this milk is used in India as a treatment for the flu and coughs.
6. A Treatment For Asthma
Now, do not stop using your inhaler as you need it but if you have asthma you may want to try sprinkling some turmeric on your food. It is believed that turmeric opens up the respiratory system so that it is easier to breathe.

Yes, there is such a thing as turmeric mouthwash and yes it does help with teeth health by removing plaque. Now, this is just a preventative measure. You should still see your dentist regularly, floss, and brush your teeth along with eating healthy.
9. A Natural Painkiller
Since turmeric acts as an anti-inflammatory, this explains why it works as a pain killer. While you could eat a dish containing turmeric to get pain relief, turmeric oil is recommended as the means by which you receive your curcumin and relief.
10. Provides Antioxidants For The Hair
Yes, free radicals can attack the hair. Using hair care products containing turmeric is a great way of keeping your hair protected from free radicals.
11. Slows Down Aging
Nothing can truly stop aging but turmeric and slow it down in several ways. First, curcumin in turmeric can help keep the blood vessels flexible. Second, it can improve blood flow to the brain, which many believe can offset the mental decline. If you are a woman and postmenopausal, consuming dishes with turmeric can reduce bone loss.
12. Heart Attack Reducer
When it comes to heart protection, turmeric does several things. It attacks free radical compounds that damage cells and have the potential of causing an infection.
Turmeric also reduces the risk of cholesterol blocking the arteries, which can cause a heart attack.
13. May Prevent Eye Degeneration
If you have or know someone with glaucoma, you understand the discomfort and degeneration of the eye that this disease brings.
A new treatment is being developed that uses curcumin in an eye drop form. Results are promising but more studies need to be done.
14. Possible Treatment For Depression
Turmeric has the ability to increase BDNF, which a lower level of BDNF can be a contributing factor to depression.
In recent studies, taking curcumin in pill form showed promising positive results as far as depression symptoms.
15. Fights Dandruff
Taking advantage of turmericās anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties opens the door to new products that are used to treat dandruff. Treating both the inflammation and bacterial problems caused by dandruff will reduce the occurrence of dandruff.
16. May Improve Skin Health

This herb is currently being considered as a possible treatment for ulcerative colitis due to its ability to treat pain, which can occur in the joints, rectum, and/or abdomen.
27. Turmeric As A Skin Moisturizer
Creating a facial mask of milk and turmeric is a wonderful way of moisturizing the skin. The key to this approach is to allow the ingredients to work. Both turmeric and milk will help remove dead skin cells so that the skin can drink up the moisture.
28. Skin Wounds Related To Cancer
Certain cancers can cause skin itching and sores that smell. A turmeric ointment is being studied as a possible treatment for skin wounds caused by cancer.
29. Possible Treatment For Headaches
Since turmeric is in the same family as ginger, it is believed to be a possible treatment for headaches especially migraines.
30. Prevents Hair Loss
One cause of hair loss is due to inflammation. Since turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory abilities, using a product with turmeric in it can reduce inflammation and stimulate hair growth.
31. Treatment For Acne
Due to turmericās anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, it is believed that this spice could be used in the treatment of acne.
32. Improve Immune System
Turmeric is a ball of wonder when it comes to what it can do for the immune system. It is anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antimicrobial. Consuming foods with turmeric in it will allow you to benefit from all this goodness but there is one catch.
The chemical curcumin is not absorbed very easily into the bloodstream. To improve absorption, make sure to sprinkle some black pepper on the food.
33. Improves Scalp Health
The anti-inflammatory benefit that turmeric brings when it comes to scalp health helps heal any abrasions that the scalp may suffer from due to hairstyling.
34. Itching (Pruritus)
People with long-term kidney disease tend to develop pruritus. Consuming curcumin in pill form is presently being looked at as a treatment for this type of itching.
35. Treatment For Radiation Damage Caused By Head And Neck Cancers
Individuals who receive radiation as part of their treatment for head and/or neck cancers also get inflammation of the mouth and/or esophagus. To reduce this inflammation, it is suggested that one can swish with a turmeric solution prior to treatment and during. This type of treatment has shown promise in preventing or reducing the inflammation brought on by radiation.
36. Aids An Upset Stomach (Dyspepsia)
Recent studies have shown that taking turmeric four times a day for seven days can help with an upset stomach.
37. Help In The Recovery Process After Bypass Surgery
If you are going in for a bypass, you may want to take note. Studies are being currently done on using curcuminoides as a pretreatment before surgery. Curcuminoides are the beneficial chemicals in turmeric that contain health benefits. What the study suggests is taking the curcuminoides three days before surgery and continuing this habit five days after the bypass. It is believed that following this regimen will reduce the chances of suffering from a heart attack after the procedure.
38. Increases Bile Production
You may wonder what the bile does and how turmeric helps in this process. In short, bile emulsifies fat and metabolizes it. Since turmeric increases the bile, this means that you will be able to lose weight quicker by burning more fat.
39. Treatment For Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Turmeric is currently being looked at as a treatment for kidney inflammation caused by systemic lupus erythematosus. While the present study is small, it is showing results when curcumin is taken in pill form three times a day for three months.
The results from the study are showing lowered blood pressure and improvements in kidney function.
40. Bacteria Elimination In The Gut
If you have a stomach ulcer caused by Helicobacter pylori then you may want to look into consuming turmeric.
While it is not as effective as the modern approach, it can help reduce this type of bacteria in the gut.

41. Tuberculosis Treatment
Now, turmeric does not directly treat tuberculosis but it can help with the problems caused by antituberculosis treatments. Research is hinting at a new therapy that would combine turmeric and Tinosopora cordifolia in a product that would be given to patients as part of their treatment to counteract the negative effects of antituberculosis medications. This combined turmeric treatment would reduce bacteria levels, reduce liver toxicity, and improve wound healing.
42. Skin Rash Caused By Lichen Planus
Currently, the product Curcumin C3 Complex by Sabinsa Corp. is being used in the treatment of Lichen planus. It is showing that taking this product three times a day for 12 days can reduce the skin irritation that is caused by Lichen planus.
43. Can Prevent Metabolic Syndrome
Since turmeric helps in lowering cholesterol, blood sugar, and triglycerides that are contributors to this syndrome, it also can prevent this metabolic disorder if taken often.
44. Can Protect The Skin From Sun Damage
To get this benefit, you can eat dishes with turmeric or take capsules of curcumin. Another approach is to apply it to your skin by way of a mask. The simplest one is to combine turmeric and honey. Apply to your face, allow to dry, and rinse off. How does it work? Well beyond the bleaching benefit that turmeric has, it also reduces the loss of skin elasticity.
45. Under Eye Treatment
Turmeric when applied to the skin can lighten it. In doing so, many women in India apply turmeric under the eyes to lighten up dark circles. It can also be used to lighten areas of the skin that have been damaged by the sun. But do not just make a paste of turmeric, which will stain your skin orange. Instead, make a simple facial mask and apply it under the eyes.
46. Scabies
Scabies is a microscopic human itch mite that burrows into the upper layer of the skin. This is what causes the itching. Turmeric essential oil has been shown to reduce the survival rate of the scabies mite.
47. Lightens Stretch Marks
As with dark circles, turmeric can lighten stretch marks. A great way of applying turmeric for this purpose is to make a mask of milk and turmeric. Both are known for their ability to even out skin tone.
48. Help Whiten Teeth
While turmeric will stain your skin if used directly, it has the opposite effect when it comes to your teeth. Brushing with turmeric can whiten your smile.
49. Reduce Hyperpigmentation
When it comes to acne, one of the side effects is hyperpigmentation. Yes, turmeric can be used to treat acne but it can also be used to reduce the production of melanin, which will darken scars and reduce the appearance of existing scars.
50. Helps In The Recovery Process After Surgery
Any surgery done to the human body causes pain but recent studies have shown that taking curcumin for a week after surgery has the possibility to reduce pain and weakness caused by the surgery. Due to curcuminās anti-inflammatory characteristic, it can also reduce the need for pain killers.

THE LOST HERBS POSTED SEPTEMBER 9, 2021 1:44 PMHi Susan,Thank you for your interest in our work. The World Health Organization (WHO) deems 1.4 mg per pound (0ā3 mg/kg) of body weight to be the recommended allowable daily intake (ADI) for curcumin. This amount should be a safe and tolerable dosage for the vast majority of users looking to reduce arthritis pain, lower inflammation, or improve overall health. But the exact dose depends on the medical condition.Powdered turmeric root has traditionally been used as a stimulant and carminative at dosages of 0.5 to 3 g/day. Dosages of 3 to 6 g/day have been investigated for protective effects against ulcers. Analgesic effects have been reported with doses of 1.5 to 2 g/day. Daily oral doses of 3,600 mg have been typically used in clinical trials, but dosages of up to 8 g/day have also been used. Higher doses are associated with adverse GI effects. Many blessings and good health!Reply

I also dont know enough about herbs to advice on what to use.ā ā Blood Flow ā the natural healing process in your body ā needs assistance for medial meniscus injuries because blood flow is greatly reduced when youāre injured. When treating a medial meniscus injury or really any type of meniscus or knee injury (ie. lateral meniscus tear, bucket-handle tear, posterior horn tear, or anterior horn tear), you need to increase blood flow to your injury while your knee is healing. This increase in blood flow will accelerate your bodyās own ability to heal itself.ā Hope this helps.ReplyCHARLES POSTED SEPTEMBER 18, 2021 5:09 PMThank you Vince, I appreciate your insight, you are right first thing I should do is have it looked at to see whatās going on.

Fat-Blocking Ginger Juice

Fat-Blocking Ginger Juice
POSTED AUGUST 23, 2021 BY CRISSY JOSHUA IN ALL ARTICLES, BACKYARD PLANTS, HOUSEHOLD REMEDIES, RECIPES33
Fat blockers help to prevent our bodies from absorbing fats. The fats are then expelled from the body naturally. They also help you feel full for longer which can help reduce your food intake. Some foods are natural fat blockers which are a healthy alternative to pharmaceuticals.
Even if youāre not trying to lose weight it is important to maintain a healthy weight and itās all too easy to put on weight! Preventing excessive weight gain and obesity is important because it can lead to so many other diseases and conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and type 2 diabetes. While this juice can help block fat, a healthy diet and exercise still need to be followed to maintain a healthy weight and body condition.
The ingredients in this juice that can block fat are ginger, apples, and apple cider vinegar. This makes it a good option for helping to block fat and also providing so many other nutrients that the body needs at the same time.
Medicinal Benefits Of This Ginger Juice
First, letās take a look at how the ingredients in this juice will help block fat. Then I will describe the other health advantages they offer.
How Does This Juice Work To Block Fat?
- Ginger has long been used in herbal medicines and it can help prevent and treat a number of ailments. It helps to block fat by slowing the accumulation of belly fat by lowering the cortisol levels that trigger the process. It may also reduce atherosclerosis, which is the buildup of dangerous fat in the arteries.
- Apples are able to block fat because of their pectin. Pectin is a soluble fiber and it absorbs water and forms a viscous consistency. By increasing mass it makes you feel full so you donāt feel the need to eat more. It also does this by slowing down how quickly your stomach empties and means it takes longer for food to enter the small intestine. By slowing digestion down, pectin also has the added bonus of allowing better absorption of nutrients.
- Apple cider vinegar has acetic acid and pectin. The acetic acid in it can reduce the storage of fat in the belly and liver. It also suppresses your appetite which can help control food intake. On top of this, it speeds up your metabolism helping to burn calories faster.
What Other Health Benefits Do These Ingredients Provide?
- The gingerol found in ginger is one of its main compounds with medicinal properties. This powerful compound can help prevent certain types of cancer. It also helps fight harmful bacteria and infections, reducing the risk of developing some diseases. Ginger can help manage osteoarthritis by reducing pain and disability. It can also lower blood sugar levels making it beneficial for people living with type 2 diabetes. Taking ginger daily can lower cholesterol levels too which could lower the risk of developing heart disease.
- The humble apple has a surprising number of health benefits. The soluble fiber in them can help lower blood cholesterol levels. They also have polyphenols which are antioxidants. One of these is flavonoid epicatechin, which can help lower blood pressure. The antioxidant properties also lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. They may also prevent cancer thanks to their antioxidants and anti-inflammatory effects. Eating apples has also been linked to better bone health by reducing the amount of calcium lost from the body. Various compounds in apples can also minimize mental decline and possibly help restore memory.
- Apple cider vinegar also has its fair share of health benefits and has been used as a remedy for centuries, if not longer. Consuming a small amount each day (1-2 tablespoons) can help you to lose weight. It also aids with digestion and can reduce bloating and get rid of heartburn. The healthy bacteria found in it protects the immune system warding off infections and helping us to recover from illnesses faster. Apple cider vinegar also lowers triglycerides which cause fatty plaque buildup along the arteries, improving heart health.
How To Make This Ginger Fat Blocking Juice
The quantities in this juice are enough for one serving and will have approximately 125 calories in it. It is best to make this fresh each time you drink it and have it straight away, or soon after preparing it.
Ingredients
- 1 tsp grated ginger
- 1 red apple
- 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
- ½ cup water
Equipment
- Blender (or juicer)
- Bowl (if using a blender)
- Fine-mesh strainer (if using a blender)
Method
- Wash your apple under running water (there is no need to dry it after).
- Cut it into small chunks and discard the core. Then add it to your blender (or juicer). You wonāt start blending until all of the ingredients are in.
- Peel some ginger and grate it using a Microplane or the finest edge of a grater so that you end up with 1 teaspoonās worth. If youāre using a juicer you donāt need to grate it and can add it in as is.
- Add 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar.
- Add ½ cup of water. Blend it all on high for at least 30 seconds or until it has all blended well.
- If youāre using a blender, place your fine-mesh strainer over a bowl large enough to catch the liquid. Push down on the pulp with a spoon to extract any remaining juice.
- Pour your juice into a glass and drink it straight away.
- Drink some water afterward to get rid of any vinegar that could be lingering on your teeth.
While apple cider vinegar has many health benefits you should always rinse your mouth out with water after drinking or eating it because it can affect your tooth enamel. For this reason, you should also drink it with some water rather than straight.
This is a drink with a slight kick to it thanks to the vinegar and the ginger. If you donāt like strong flavors you can test it first and dilute it with more water if you like. Itās very refreshing though and you can add ice if you prefer your drinks cold which makes this a lovely drink on a warm day. Otherwise, itās a very warming drink on a cool day.

THE LOST HERBS POSTED AUGUST 24, 2021 4:55 PMHi Robin,While you can substitute one for the other, ginger powder is going to be less astringent than fresh ginger and the texture will be slightly different.Since ground ginger has a much more concentrated flavor than fresh ginger, you will need to use less of it. For every tablespoon of fresh ginger, you will need to substitute ¼ teaspoon of ground ginger. Many blessings and good health!Reply

THE LOST HERBS POSTED AUGUST 24, 2021 5:24 PMHi Bev,Ginger can have side effects such as abdominal discomfort, heartburn, diarrhea, and mouth and throat irritation if taken in large doses. Apple cider vinegar may help reduce appetite, but it may also cause feelings of nausea, particularly when consumed as part of a drink with a bad flavor.

How To Quickly Cool Any Fever

How To Quickly Cool Any Fever
Posted March 10, 2022 by Stacy Filton in All Articles, Backyard Plants, Household Remedies, How To6
Fever is a natural defense mechanism that the body uses to fight off infections and illnesses. However, it must be treated immediately when fever is high or persistent.
Waiting until symptoms worsen can lead to further complications and worse outcomes.
Understanding how fever works can help you diagnose a fever and provide the appropriate treatment.
This article will show you how to naturally and rapidly cool a fever, including identifying fever symptoms.
What Is A Fever?
Fever is a natural defense mechanism that the body uses to fight off infections and illnesses.
It is a response the body has to boost the immune system and when your body fights an infection, it raises the temperature.
It sends out cytokines that cause water to evaporate from your skin and sweat glands. This cooling effect allows heat to escape, which lowers fever and other symptoms of severe illness such as nausea, vomiting, elevated rate, or debilitating headaches.
The most likely cause of fever is infection by microbes like viruses or bacteria, which can be easily picked up during day-to-day living.
However, other causes may be:
- Autoimmune disorders
- Toxins
- Infections
- Heatstroke
- Organ Failure
How do you know if you have a fever?
There are many obvious signs that can indicate the presence of a fever. For instance, you may experience:
- A feeling of intense warmth within the body.
- Physical chills.
- Sweating.
- A rapid heartbeat.
- Nausea and vomiting.
Cooling treatment options for adults
There are many ways to naturally cool a fever in adults.
You can try:
Using A Cold Compress
One of the best options is using a cold compress, which can be made at home or bought from a pharmacy.
This can provide relief without any risks of adverse effects.
Another option is to use ice packs on the forehead, neck, chest, and back. When using ice packs, itās important to remember that they should be used for up to five minutes every 20 minutes or so to avoid frostbite.
Take A Tepid Bath
Many people think of taking a cold bath when they have a fever.
This might seem appropriate at first glance, but doing so can raise your body temperature even more.
Taking the time to take tepid baths is not only good for you, but it can also help with muscle fatigue and stress relief.
Vinegar Socks
If you have high fever, just soak your socks in vinegar.
Keep them on your feet for about 20 minutes, and refresh them every half hour until the temperature begins to drop. You can use regular or apple vinegar.
Try A Freshly Brewed Herbal Tea
There are many teas that have been shown to assist in reducing the signs and symptoms of fever, including:
Yarrow Tea:
To cool yourself down from a fever, make a cup of yarrow tea.
The herb will open your pores and trigger the sweating that accelerates a fever toward its end.
Steep a tablespoon in freshly boiled water for 10 minutes, and then drink it until you start sweating!
Yarrow tincture is one that everyone should have in their herb kit! Nicole likes this botanical for its antibacterial properties. It is effective for ear infections, wound care, relieving fevers, shortening the duration of the cold and flu, and helping to improve relaxation during illness. You can buy your own from the Apothecary!
Ginger Tea:
To make a ginger tea, use half a teaspoon of minced ginger root in 1 cup just-boiled water. Strain and drink it down quickly before the water cools off.
Ginger is well known for its sweating properties and easing cramps, so this will be beneficial to you.
Elderflower Tea:
Another natural drink, elderflower tea, helps us sweat.
It is also suitable for other problems associated with colds and flu-like mucus congestion.
To make it, mix two teaspoons of the herb in a cup of boiled water and let the mix steep for at least 15 minutes before straining out the leaves.
Drink three times a day as long as you have a fever or continue to feel sick.
Echinacea Tea:
An echinacea-based tea has been used for centuries and is a trusted source of boosting your immune system.
Drinking the tea when you first start to feel some sense of illness can help you fight an infection faster so that it doesnāt last too long.
Willow Bark Infusion:
If you are looking for some natural substitutes to over-the-counter pain relievers such as anti-inflammatories, consider willow bark!
Willow bark can be made into an extract and taken as a tincture, made up as a tea, or in powdered form.
Opt For More Vitamin C
Orange juice and other fruit juices such as cranberry juice rich in vitamin C are good choices when you have a fever.
Vitamins, especially vitamin C, can help your immune system fight off infection by strengthening cellular defenses and giving your immune system a boost to help reduce the fever.
Turn Up The Spice
Cayenne pepper is a well-respected ingredient that can be added to your foods when you have a fever.
It contains capsaicin, an alarmingly hot component found in many types of peppers.
This spicy seasoning will make you sweat and rapidly distribute blood through your body.
Opt For Soups
Eating little and often when suffering from a fever is always the best advice, as the digestive system can weaken under the threat of infection or disease.
Soups are by far the best meal to have, and having soups loaded with herbs and spices such as basil, capsaicin, and pepper will produce sweat which will help cool the body down.
Broth-based soup provides energy and nutrients to fight disease or lower a fever.
Light And Airy Clothing
The bodyās heat will escape through your clothes and provide some relief to the surrounding environment.
Wearing light, breathable clothing is recommended as it ensures that you donāt overheat, which is especially important if your fever happens when the weather is hot too.
Hydration To The Max
If you are experiencing difficulty keeping food down or have no appetite, itās best to drink!
Water, iced tea, or very diluted juice are all great options to sip as much as you can manage, or the alternative is to suck on ice chips, which can also reduce a fever temperature.
Rest
This seems like the most simple piece of advice ever. Still, resting is repairing when your body is fighting something that can cause a rapid onset fever.
Rest as much as possible.
Cooling treatment options for children
To quickly cool a fever, there are a variety of treatment options.
One way is to apply a cold, wet cloth on the forehead or neck and keep it on for five minutes.
Another option is to put protected ice on the chest or back and keep it on for as long as possible.
When cooling a fever, you should also stay hydrated and avoid caffeinated drinks like coffee, tea, and soda because they can cause dehydration and worsen the fever symptoms.
Additionally, you should avoid placing children in direct sunlight because it can cause an escalation in a fever.
When To Seek Medical Assistance
A fever is certainly not always a bad thing!
Yes, it may feel terrible at the time, but it is the bodyās way of ridding whatever is happening inside that you simply cannot see.
However, there are some instances where, no matter what you try, the fever just will not be controlled. In this instance, itās always best practice to seek medical assistance.
For Adults:
Suppose your fever goes above 103°F (39.4°C) or doesnāt go down within two days. In that case, a call to the doctor is warranted as you may also be experiencing symptoms such as severe pain in any part of your body or shortness of breath and confusion.
Adults with these symptoms should also seek immediate medical attention for further diagnosis and treatment.
For Toddlers To Young Adults:
If your child is experiencing irritability or muscle aches, they could benefit from medication.
If their fever goes above the 102°F (38.9°C) mark, it may be necessary to use pharmaceutical interventions to bring it right down.
If your child is uncomfortable or distressed, or if the fever persists for more than three days, you should consult with a doctor.
For Infants:
Babies up to 3 months old be seen by their doctor if they have a temperature above 100.4°F (38°C).
If your baby has other symptoms, or the fever goes beyond 102°F (38.9°C), you should call for medical attention immediately.
This is because children ages 6 months to 2 years who have temperatures at or above 102 degrees can be offered over-the-counter medication under supervision by their doctors.
Take Away
A high fever can be very serious.
However, an occasional lower temperature fever is nothing to worry about as it helps your body heal itself!
All over-the-counter medicines generally have risks and side effects just like other treatments for this condition, so instead of heading for the pharmacy, you could try one of these alternative remedies first. Here are also a few of Nicoleās top picks that are found in the Essential Winter Defense Bundle. Whether maintaining lung health, boosting immunity, or reducing fevers, each herb supports overall well-being this winter and beyond.

5 Ways Narcissists Project and Attack You
Written by Darius Cikanavicius on September 25, 2017
Most narcissists generally lack self-awareness. Indeed, their sense of self-esteem and self-worth depends on how others perceive them, and they tend to deny flaws in themselves and blame others for their own shortcomings, mistakes, and misfortunes. This is called projection, and people with narcissistic tendencies are projection-heavy individuals.
Here we will explore five different but related ways people with strong narcissistic, sociopathic and psychopathic tendencies deny, project, blame, confuse, and hurt others.
1. Calling you things that you are not
A classic example, Youre cheating on me,when you are not, but you can bet theyre cheating on you.BEZZY COMMUNITYMeet Bezzy for Depression, a community that cares
Find encouragement and support through 1-1 messaging and advice from others dealing with major depressive disorder.
Or, Youre selfish because you dont want to do what I am asking you to do. You only think about yourself.Meanwhile they are the ones who constantly make up excuses, break promises, are unreliable, think only about themselves, or compete with you. Not only that, they will forget all the things that you have already done for them.
In their eyes, they are entitled to your resources (time, money, energy), and you are aggressing against them when you wont, cant, or dont give them what they want. They will not reciprocate unless there is some reason for them to. They will use various manipulation and abuse tactics like name calling, mocking, bullying, triangulation, minimizing, character defamation, berating feelings, trolling, obscuring the issue, deflecting, gaslighting, guilt-tripping, provoking, unreasonable criticism, nitpicking, or plain verbal abuse all to make you feel bad and give into their demands.
If its not you, then theres always someone else. Look how horrible this other person is! And do you know what that person did? Meaning, forget about me and my shortcomings; lets find someone else with flaws and talk about them. That way, in their mind, we donāt have to think about my shortcomings, or we will come to a conclusion that Im great by default because everyone else is so horrible.
2. Grandiosity, mimicking, and exaggeration
Narcissists think that they are super-ultra-turbo-mega special, that they deserve exceptional treatment, or that they are justified in hurting others. They have grandiose goals and exaggerate their achievements to appear more impressive and more superior.
Narcissists often feel a need to compete with others since they are factually not that special and terribly insecure on top of it. They will pretend, lie, hurt or exploit others, or do whatever else they deem necessary for personal gain.
As a result, they may take upon other peoples character traits and achievements. This originates from a place of envy and self-aggrandizement. Often to the degree of mimicking, plagiarizing, stealing, and being a fraud, all while defaming and belittling others. This is meant to destroy the credibility of their victims while appearing to be more competent themselves. This provides a handy distraction from what is really going on.
This is another weird form of projection where they see something they admire in someone (be it actually admirable or just a status symbol), and then instead of actually working on achieving it they simply claim they already have it or that they are entitled to it. Usually simply by saying it, with confidence and conviction. Consequently, as they claim the positive traits, achievements or characteristics of others, they discard their own negative features onto their victims. They may or may not be aware that it is happening, but it is happening nevertheless.https://inline.psychcentral.com/r/ssr/f097396d-c3cc-4597-b750-1e3236901b40?utm_campaign=pc-bh-mid-social-proof-driver&utm_medium=embed&selector=%23m26976eaf-2be7-4e3a-b723-0502452900e9+%3E+div+%3E+div&csid=38b6faa4-c3b0-4497-bb5e-39a3c908512b&caid=3572cef0-16b1-41e7-88b5-b7a17ffb82fa&ciid=701856df-473d-468c-a76b-4ac6105cc72c&tenant=wk_1hYmqsRCbwXB0ndTQdgXxNR6252&srckey=src_1hYmqunTHJvIJ8xGurFf1jMyi5f&cxsid=b95e92f4-77f9-47a4-b268-5925a456d09d&imre=aHR0cHM6Ly9wc3ljaGNlbnRyYWwuY29tL2Jsb2cvcHN5Y2hvbG9neS1zZWxmLzIwMTcvMDkvbmFyY2lzc2lzdGljLXByb2plY3Rpb24%3D&_mfuuid_=c954392b-6ec3-4ac4-8b05-1b0d5e737b6f&width=368&subId=betterhelp_psy_mid_socialproof_37786
This whole process requires a lot of delusion, pretending, and deception. Sadly, many people fall for that and see the narcissist as this wonderful and amazing human being that they present themselves as, yet in actuality are lightyears from.
3. Preemptive strike
Whenever a narcissistic person feels threatened, they will call you the things that they themselves are as or are afraid that others see them as. And then they will try to stalk you, slander you, or discredit you. They will try to sabotage and destroy you. They will start a smear campaign and attempt character assassination. In their mind, frighteningly, you have become their mortal enemy.
They also have no problem doing all of it preemptively and calling it defense.
So if you privately call them out, set healthier boundaries, or end the relationship, they may be afraid that you can see their flaws, or that you will tell others what kind of person they are. Whether you do that or not is not important to them. Because in their mind the mere possibility of it is a good enough excuse to label you as an enemy. And because a narcissistic type of person has little or no empathy, they may imagine that you will behave as they would in these situations. If they would lie, or more likely are already lying, they will accuse you of lying.
And so they will do all these things just because they think you are somehow trying to or might hurt them. They also will accuse you of the very things they themselves are doing.
4. Playing the victim
A common narcissistic strategy is to play the victim. You hurt me! Poor, poor me. Instead of working through the issue with you or internally, they have no problem dragging others into it by lying and painting you as the perpetrator and themselves as the victim.
Oftentimes, this involves the aforementioned preemptive strike or provoking to get a reaction. For example, destroying your property, slandering you, turning people against you, or physically attacking you. And then when you respond appropriately to their active or passive aggression, now they can say that youre the aggressor because you are hurting them or that youre unreasonable because of your wild, unacceptable behavior.PSYCH CENTRAL RESOURCESSetting better boundaries starts here

Your privacy is important to us
Its callous and calculated, and again, it involves accusing you of the things that they themselves are doing or have done. So its not uncommon that the audience of this dramatic spectacle doesnt see the whole picture or doesnt care enough to figure out the full story. It is not uncommon that many will take the side of the narcissist. The narcissist is desperate that their spectacle be believed for the sake of their emotional management, so much so that they will say and do almost anything.
For a narcissist, it is rarely about the truth and almost always about their audiences perception.
This way they receive false validation that they are right and good, and that you are wrong and evil. Here, their sense of self-esteem is restored and their feelings of shame and inadequacy are managed. So its all well and good. Except for those who got hurtbut who cares about them, right?
5. The No, you! defense
If you call them out on their crap or if they suspect you can see through their smoke and mirrors, they will say that its youor otherswho are all these things. Or that all of it is false and nonsense. They may even say that they are honest, caring, and authentic, and that you dont understand these things, you are projecting, you are pretending, you are triggered, you are gaslighting, you are narcissisticyou are whatever buzzword they have learned!
Because people with narcissistic tendencies can be interested in human psychology, too. A lot of them actually work in the helping, teaching, and medical fields or pretend to be experts and intellectuals on social media. Some of them are really smart, eloquent, and popular, which makes their statements more believable to an unaware audience.
They can learn all these fancy terms and phrases, yet they often dont understand or even care about how to apply them correctly. Here, its another tool for manipulation. For them, learning means finding ways to justify all of their disturbing thoughts and behaviors, or use the knowledge as a tool against others for personal gain.
They will do anything but accept reality and become a decent personyet they can play one quite well.
Have you encountered any of these things when dealing with narcissistic people? Did you notice anything that was not included in this list? Feel free to share it in the comments below or write about it in your personal journal.https://inline.psychcentral.com/r/ssr/8d286959-be7f-4294-bb9c-d2479730b04e?utm_campaign=hl-mental-health-mpl&utm_medium=embed&selector=%23m6f8d2901-e164-4f93-8f95-9eaa0c410ee0+%3E+div+%3E+div&csid=38b6faa4-c3b0-4497-bb5e-39a3c908512b&caid=3572cef0-16b1-41e7-88b5-b7a17ffb82fa&ciid=701856df-473d-468c-a76b-4ac6105cc72c&tenant=wk_1hYmqsRCbwXB0ndTQdgXxNR6252&srckey=src_1hYmqunTHJvIJ8xGurFf1jMyi5f&cxsid=b95e92f4-77f9-47a4-b268-5925a456d09d&imre=aHR0cHM6Ly9wc3ljaGNlbnRyYWwuY29tL2Jsb2cvcHN5Y2hvbG9neS1zZWxmLzIwMTcvMDkvbmFyY2lzc2lzdGljLXByb2plY3Rpb24%3D&_mfuuid_=c954392b-6ec3-4ac4-8b05-1b0d5e737b6f&width=368&subId=bhwidget_psy_33003

Antiviral Herbal Mulled Cider

Antiviral Herbal Mulled Cider
POSTED MARCH 8, 2022 BY CRISSY JOSHUA IN ALL ARTICLES, BACKYARD PLANTS, HOUSEHOLD REMEDIES, HOW TO, RECIPES4
Making your own antiviral herbal mulled cider is a great way to ward off viruses and colds or lessen the symptoms if you do happen to catch one. This antiviral herbal mulled cider is also delicious as an added bonus. The healing herbs and spices infused in the apple juice and water will make you feel better and recover faster.
A mulled drink is just one that has been made prepared with spices by heating everything in a pot and straining it. Many of the spices are warming on their own but the result is extra comforting when you take them in a hot drink.
Letās look at the medicinal qualities of the ingredients first and then Iāll show you how to make this recipe in just 25 minutes.
Medicinal Benefits Of The Ingredients
To make this antiviral herbal mulled cider you need seven ingredients: apple juice (or apple cider), water, licorice root, orange peel, cloves, ginger, star anise, and cinnamon. Here is how each of these works to fight viruses.
Benefits Of Apple Juice / Apple Cider
The antiviral activity of apples are present in the skin and the pulp of the fruit. Apple juice is antiviral due to its tannins and related compounds. Apple juice and cider also help keep you hydrated, which is important if you have a virus and to flush the system out.
Benefits Of Water
While water is essential for staying healthy and hydrated for general day-to-day wellbeing, itās even more important when you have a virus. When youāre sick with the flu or another type of virus many of the symptoms lead to dehydration.
Staying hydrated when you are sick speeds up your recovery too. It also helps with symptoms by keeping your mucus thin which helps your body clear it from the sinuses and lungs. Water will also help you eliminate toxins and bacteria.
Benefits Of Licorice Root
Glycyrrhizin, liquiritigenin, licochalcone A, licochalcone E, 18β-glycyrrhetinic acid, and glabridin are the main antiviral compounds found in licorice root. Commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine, licorice root contains nearly 300 flavonoids. Many studies have proven the effects of licorice root as an antiviral herb.
One of the ways it helps is by stopping virus replication. Itās also anti-inflammatory which helps to improve your immune response. However, if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, or kidney disease, you should avoid licorice. You can still benefit from the other antiviral ingredients in this recipe.
Benefits Of Orange Peel
Oranges contain important polymethoxylated flavones, which are most prevalent in the peel. The flavones have antiviral properties. Orange peels are also rich in vitamin C and A making them a good antioxidant that boosts your immune system to help fight viruses. If you do get a cold or flu then orange peels help to remove phlegm, improving your symptoms and making you feel better.
Benefits Of Cloves
The clove plant is one of the best sources of phenolic compounds and has long been used in alternative medicine for its antiviral activity, among other benefits. Cloves also have anti-inflammatory properties which are useful when you have a cold or flu. They can help to relieve symptoms of respiratory infections and speed up the recovery process.
Benefits Of Ginger
Ginger has long been used in natural medicine, particularly in southeast Asia. Itās even part of a common modern-day remedy used around the world to fight colds and the flu with many people swearing by the old ginger, lemon, and honey tea remedy. Certain antiviral compounds in ginger help to keep viruses at bay. The gingerol in ginger is anti-inflammatory and has antioxidants, helping to boost your immune system and health in general.
Benefits Of Star Anise
Star anise holds a special place in traditional Asian medicines and has been used for centuries. Today, itās widely accepted further around the world that star anise has antiviral properties. One of the main compounds found in star anise is shikimic acid which is the primary ingredient used in Tamiflu, an antiviral drug. Star anise has the highest levels of shikimic acid out of any plant.
Benefits Of Cinnamon
Cinnamon has been found to prevent and/or eliminate viruses. It is also rich in antioxidants so another immune booster, helping to keep you healthy and fighting illnesses faster. Cinnamon also boasts anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties that prevent harmful bacteria from growing.
All of these ingredients have many other medicinal properties other than fighting viruses too. Combining them in a tasty, healthy drink is a great way to consume them at once. So, letās look at the quantities to use and how to make this mulled cider now.
How To Make This Antiviral Herbal Mulled Cider
As I mentioned earlier, this takes around 25 minutes to make. The quantities below make two portions and each one will have approximately 114 calories. This will depend on the type of apple juice or apple cider you use. If you can prepare fresh apple juice yourself ahead of making this recipe, even better.

With the cold and influenza season in full swing, we need all the help we can get to keep our immune systems healthy and strong. Here are also a few of Nicoleās top picks that are found in the Essential Winter Defense Bundle. Whether maintaining lung health, boosting immunity, or reducing fevers, each herb supports overall well-being this winter and beyond.

- Wash and peel 1 orange and add the peel to the pot
